This blog is concentrating on natural and homeopathic remedies to help with some common baby complaints; first signs of illness, teething, nappy rash and colic.
It can be so overwhelming becoming a parent (especially if you have a ‘colicky baby’ or a teething baby and they are upset a lot of the time), I hope this blog helps, empowers and gives you and your little one(s) a little bit of peace and contentment.
Most parents dread teething as it can mean an upset, crying baby, lack of sleep (for everyone), possible fever and can last anything from a few days or a few weeks (before the next one comes along)! For this reason, sometimes an individual homeopathic prescription is needed. However, tissue salts are AMAZING for teething and are definitely a good start.
- Tissue salt – Combination ‘R’ (New Era & Schuessler)
Below are some keynotes for individual remedies, however it may be worth having an appointment:
- Chamomilla 30c or 200c
This remedy typifies the most classic picture of a teething child.
Very irritable, angry, hard to please due to intense pain.
May not know what they want and throw it away as soon as you give it to them.
Classic symptom of the need for this remedy is one red cheek (the side where tooth is coming through) and diarrhoea.
NB – this is the remedy found in teething granules, however the strength is only 6c which is very low and commonly not high enough to make an impact.
- Pulsatilla 30c or 200c
For the clingy child, who wants to be held and comforted.
Can be better for fresh air and may develop a cold at the same time.
They are at their calmest when being cuddled.
- Belladonna 30c or 200c
This remedy is best when the child develops a fever alongside teething.
The child’s cheeks will be very hot and red with intense pain.
Worse in the middle of the night.
- Calcarea Carbonica 30c or 200c
Very slow and delayed teething.
Painful and often has diarrhoea with teething.
There are homeopathic remedies to treat nappy rash if necessary, however my first bit of advice would be to use a natural barrier cream, my favourite is Weleda Calendula Nappy Change Cream. This is natural and contains calendula which is wonderfully gentle, healing and effective. Or if your baby has hypersensitive skin you could use Weleda White Mallow Nappy Change Cream.
I would also advise to be careful what you use in the bath, you can either use nothing for a bit or again something natural and gentle such as Weleda. As a Weleda Wellbeing Advisor I love the whole Weleda range, if you want more information around skincare, please get in touch.
Colic is very common and is characterised by griping, sharp abdominal pains from trapped wind that comes and goes. Babies suffering from colic will usually moan, cry or scream and move their legs and body around to try and relieve their distress. It can affect a baby differently; some it will be a pattern of after every feed, some can seem like it is constant and others can be from around 5/6pm until bedtime (and other variations).
Here are some things you can do to relieve your baby’s distress:
- Take your baby to a cranial osteopath.
- Infant probiotics (ensure to use a good, reputable brand)
- Check your diet, your baby may be sensitive to the following foods: dairy, eggs, pulses, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, citrus, spicy food, cabbage and cauliflower.
- Tissue Salt – Mag Phos (No. 8). Dissolve 6 tablets in half a cup of warm water and give a teaspoon of fluid every 5 minutes.
To prevent: before every feed crush one tablet of Mag phos and one of Nat phos (No. 10) together and mix in a tablespoon of water. Give one teaspoon before every feed.
- Colocynthis 30c
Pain is better for bending double; babies who draw their knees up to their chest to try and relieve the pain
- Chamomilla 30c
Unbearable pain, baby screams angrily
Crying only relieved from carrying baby and rocking
Often worse late evening
- Lycopodium 30c
Abdomen is distended and full of wind
Lots of gurgling and rolling around in pain (if able to roll)
Usually desperate for milk when hungry and may take in a lot of air when feeding, starting the whole process again
First signs of illness
- Tissue salt – Ferrum Phos (No. 4) Tissue Salts explained at the end of blog
- Homeopathic remedy combination ABC 30c (Aconite, Belladonna, Chamomilla)
If illness has already developed and baby is not themselves (for example – fever, no appetite, irritable, lethargic etc) seek medical help where appropriate and speak to your homeopath.
You will see that I recommend tissue salts a fair bit, here is a little explanation as to what they are:
There are 12 salts, all of which are found in the earth’s rock and soil. It is believed these 12 mineral salts should be in balance for optimal health. If we are deficient in one or more, we are predisposed to illness.
Although these are great for everyone, I find them especially effective for babies and children.
There are two main brands – New Era and Schuessler. Both have ‘soft tablets’ which dissolve quickly and easily, however the New Era salts dissolve a little quicker and are made in the UK and for these reasons I prefer them.
You can purchase online either direct, Amazon or other online companies. Holland & Barrett sell Schuessler tissue salts.
