The liver is the second largest organ in the body after the skin and is responsible for many processes. It plays a vital role in our metabolism, as well as aids digestion and circulation. Perhaps its most important role is eliminating toxins from the body; it is our natural ‘detox’ mechanism and helps keep us healthy.

It is obvious that with ‘wear and tear’ the liver gets a good workout, however
sometimes it can become sluggish and overloaded. Here are some symptoms that
indicate your liver is struggling:

 1. Fatigue
Sleeping well and still have no energy? This could be a sign that your system is
overloaded with toxins and cannot work efficiently enough to eliminate. As the liver is also responsible for processing nutrients, fatigue could also be a sign of nutritional
deficiency.

 2. Digestive issues – indigestion, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, bloating after meals, hemorrhoids.
If you suffer from any of these on a regular basis, it could mean your liver is struggling.

 3. Skin problems – rashes, psoriasis, eczema, acne.
The liver is essential in eliminating toxins from the body, if you suffer with any of these skin issues it could be that the liver is pushing toxins out through the skin, signaling it is overloaded. If the skin appears slightly yellow, this is usually a sign of liver
dysfunction.

 4. Bad breath
Bad breath can be due to poor dental hygiene and digestion disturbance, however it can also indicate that your liver is sluggish.

 5. Hormonal Imbalance/Menstrual disturbance
As the liver filters hormones, if your liver is struggling it could present through heavy/clotted periods, irregular periods and/or menopausal problems.

 6. Difficulty losing weight (even if dieting/exercising)
When the liver is struggling, blood sugar levels rise and excess calories are stored as fats in the body. This makes it difficult to lose weight.

7. Interrupted sleep
Waking up through the night can indicate that the liver needs some help. Waking
between the hours of 2-4am is most characteristic that your liver is sluggish.

 What can you do about it?

 One of the most important things to do is reduce the amount of toxins that your liver has to work through. This can be done through:

  • Eating well – cut out processed and sugary foods.
  • Try to eat organic produce wherever possible and eat home cooked meals.
  • Use natural products – this can range from your skincare to your deodorant (there are lots of chemicals in synthetic products).
  • Drink more water – help your liver flush out the toxins. Add some fresh lemon to make it more effective (hot water and fresh lemon is best).
  • Limit alcohol intake.

In addition try to exercise. Exercise improves blood circulation to and through the liver, promoting its detoxification process.
Don’t forget about getting enough sleep and rest!
